MURRELLS INLET, SC - Robert Ward Massie, age 70, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, September 22, 2024 at Murrells Inlet, SC. Robert was a native of Tazewell, VA and a star football player at Tazewell High School. He began his career in banking, and spent many years as Controller for Thompson and Litton, an engineering and architectural firm in Wise, VA. He was a fan of the Auburn Tigers, and an avid fan of the NY Yankees from a young age after visiting New York and attending a game while accompanying his father on a buying trip for his grandfather's department store. Robert was an excellent golfer and was a long-time member and served as a Board Member of Lonesome Pine Country Club. A committed Christian, Robert was a long-time member of Gladeville Presbyterian Church and most recently Pawley's Island Presbyterian Church.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Sheffey and Martha Ward Massie. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Becky Bays Massie, who met at church camp at a young age and have been together ever since; by his son, Jeremy Massie (Betsy), his daughter Jessalyn Massie, grandchildren Luke and Annabelle Massie; brother Sheffey Bramwell Massie (Christy); sisters Marsha Stinson (Steve, deceased), Charlotte Wilson (Larry), and Melissa Thompson (Jimmy); brothers-in-law Coy Bays (Beth, deceased), Fred Bays (Teressa), and Scott Bays (Marsha).
Memorial services for Robert Massie will be held Saturday, September 28, 2024 at 1 pm at Gladeville Presbyterian Church in Wise, VA with a reception for his family and friends following the service in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Gladeville Presbyterian Church PO Box 1709 Wise, VA 24293, or Tazewell Presbyterian Church PO Box 26 Tazewell, VA 24651, or to the charity of your choice.

Robert was a very fine man and a wonderful friend. His humor was misunderstood by many but unbelievebly funny to those of us with open minds and higher than average intelligence:) He was unique and interesting and I enjoyed every minute I spent with him and his family. He will be missed!
