Roy Moody Obituary

Roy Wiley (Buster) Moody

February 9, 2025

KINGSPORT - Roy Wiley (Buster) Moody, 77, of Kingsport died in his home on Sunday, February 9, 2025.

Roy was born in Kingsport to the late James Clamon Sr. and Elsie Tucker Moody. He served in multiple management positions for Arcata Graphics/Quebecor (previously Kingsport Press) for 35 years before retiring in 2006. He continued to maintain several friendships with coworkers by meeting weekly for breakfast. Following his retirement, he began remodeling houses, eventually becoming a faithful landlord of several homes.

Roy was a member of Sunnyside Baptist Church for more than 45 years. He had a thriving relationship with members of the Couples 2 Sunday school class. He also served as a long-time deacon and on many committees, including the fellowship committee where he could sample various food dishes to his heart's content.

Roy was a gifted craftsman who enjoyed working with his hands. He could build nearly anything he set his mind to, from making stained glass nativity scenes to crafting several pieces of furniture that grace his own home and those of his children and grandchildren. He used this talent to help build children's play areas at both Sunnyside and the TLC Community Center in Elizabethton.

Roy probably wouldn't have considered himself a teacher, but he shared his knowledge and gifts with his sons, his daughters-in-law and his grandchildren. He was a true handyman and we all learned much from him, from home and automotive fix-it projects, to woodworking and from gardening to landscaping. Roy loved the Lord and showed his faith and love through actions, most notably in his tender and patient care for his beloved wife in the years prior to her death. He was a generous man who had a fun sense of humor and enjoyed picking at his favorite people. He was deeply loved and respected by his family.

In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death by his brothers, Randal and J.C. Moody, and sister, Jeanette (Moody) Salley. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Sharon Kay (Hobbs) Moody.

Roy is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Tanja, Bryan and Alondra, and Brandon and Brandi; grandchildren, Clay (and his wife Macey), Spencer, and Allison, Madison Vielmette (and her husband Joshua), Colin, Joshua, and Ava, and Dalton Kroenert (and his wife Tessie); his brothers Dannie (and his wife Carolyn) and Gene (and his wife Phyllis); and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Thursday, February 13, 2025 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Sunnyside Baptist Church. Funeral Service will follow at 7:00 PM with Dr. Bill Sims officiating. Committal Service and Interment will be held Friday, February 14, 2025 at 11:00 AM in the Garden of the Mausoleum at East Lawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Clay Moody, Spencer Moody, Colin Moody, Joshua Moody, Joshua Vielmette, and Dalton Kroenert.

In lieu of sending flowers, the family requests that you consider making a donation to either Sunnyside Baptist Church's building fund, 406 Cooks Valley Road, Kingsport, TN 37664 or to TLC Community Center, 145 Judge Don Lewis Blvd, Elizabethton, TN 37643.
