Sandra Darlene Brickey Dorton

Sandra Darlene Brickey Dorton was born September 15, 1949, in Scott County, Virginia, and passed away with her family by her side at the age of 75 on Sunday, March 9, 2025, at her residence of 40 years.

Sandra had a great love of our Lord. She made sure she led her daughters to church whenever the doors were open and even when they were not as she was the custodian for First Baptist Church in Gate City for over 20 years.

She served the Lord by preparing his house for worship and any special events.

Sandra had a compassionate ear for any troubled member of the congregation. People would search for her to talk to her while she went about her daily duties. She tried to always listen and give respectful advice.

Following her career at the church, she also worked at Henard Metal.

Sandra was an avid reader. She loved both fiction and nonfiction, and she loved to read the Bible. She also loved music and loved to listen to her music very loudly. Sandra enjoyed Elvis, Celine Dion, The Tenors, Il Divo, and Danny Gokey.

She loved visiting the beach, especially to walk and look for seashells. Sandra searched for the largest seashells she could find.

She had a special affinity for shopping for shoes. Sandra loved her shoes and took pride in them. She never passed up an opportunity to shoe shop.

After Isaiah was born, he immediately became the love of her life. He brought her so much joy, and she adored her sweet grandson. Sandra would take every opportunity to show off his picture to anyone she could.

Sandra was preceded in death by her mother, Blanche Hammonds; father, Boyd Brickey; and her sister, Judy Summey.

Those left to cherish Sandra's memory are her daughters, Amy Dorton, and her husband, Roger Hammond and Melissa Koop, and her husband, Tony Koop; grandson, Isaiah Koop; the father of her children, Bill Dorton; and her siblings, Diane Dybevick, Jeanette Dingus, Jeanelle Ashworth, Georgia Counts, Steve Brickey, and B.C. Brickey.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm Sunday, March 16, 2025, in the chapel of Oak Hill Funeral Home.

A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 3:00 pm with Pastor Kevin Morris and Pastor Luke Tolley officiating.

An Entombment Service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, March 17, 2025, at Oak Hill Memorial Park in the Chapel Mausoleum. Those attending are asked to meet at the funeral home by 10:30 am.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to their mom's wonderful neighbors for caring about their mom and for their help whenever the family called. Particularly, Zandra Long, Sue Fletcher and Jennifer Lilly.

The family also extends a heartfelt thank you to the staffs of MEOC PACE, NOVA and MSA Hospice for the love and care shown to their mom.
