Virgie "Jean" Fannon May 14, 2024
DUFFIELD, VA - Virgie "Jean" Fannon, 90, of Duffield, VA, passed away Tuesday, May 14, 2024.
Jean was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
She was born in Pattonsville, Virginia, the daughter of the late Luther Bowen and Emma Legg Bowen and was of the Baptist faith.
Jean was a graduate of Fairview High School and the United States Postal Service Management Academy. She was employed by the United States Postal Service serving first as a postal clerk and later as postmaster. She retired in 1989 after more than 33 years of service. She truly enjoyed her job and always greeted everyone with a smile.
In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by Kenny, her loving husband of over 70 years; brothers, Clyde Bowen, and Bill Bowen; sisters, Pauline Avalone, Mabel Shipley, and Helen Lane.
Jean is survived by her son, Jack Fannon and wife, Susan of Kingsport; daughter, Lori Green and husband, Daniel of Sahuarita, AZ; grandsons, Ruston Fannon of Duffield, Kevin Wade of Morenci, AZ, Matthew Dockery of Kingsport; granddaughters, Leslie Guy of Kingsport, and Noelle Christensen of Arvada, CO; great grandsons, Jackson Guy of Kingsport, and Mason Wade of Morenci, AZ.
Jean was an excellent cook and always the gracious hostess. Over the years she and Kenny welcomed hundreds of guests to their home in Duffield. It was known to all that she would feed any hungry soul who came to her door. She was well known for her delicious Southern breakfast and her famous caramel cake. When hosting the Rail Road club with Kenny, she served many delectable treats. It was said the members did not come to the meeting; they came for the wonderful food and hospitality.
In addition to cooking, Jean also liked to travel throughout the United States. She always made sure her family went on vacation every summer. She loved seeing the country and trying new and different foods. When she wasn't cooking at home, she truly enjoyed eating out. Jean was an avid NASCAR and Cincinnati Reds fan. Most Sunday Afternoons you would find her cheering on her favorite driver. But the one thing she valued most was spending time with her family and friends.
Jean served her community in many ways. She worked on the Duffield Daze Parade Committee with Kenny. It was her job to order and sell Duffield Daze t-shirts. She also helped him with the annual Veteran's Day Dinner in Duffield. They were a loving team and worked tirelessly on these events for many years.
Jean was a beautiful person and a true Southern lady. Her strength was supported by a sense of optimism and continuous positive outlook on life. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.
