Lindsey Salyer Obituary

2 Timothy Chapter 4 Versus 7-8 "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. BLOOMINGDALE - Lindsey Don Salyer, 89, of the Bloomingdale community went to be with his Lord and Savior and reunite with his late wife Patricia Ann Tucker Salyer, on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, at Lakebridge Hospice following an extended illness.

He was born on October 3, 1934, in Jenkins, KY to the late Clyde and Etta McConnell Salyer, and lived in Kingsport, TN since 1940. He was a 1952 graduate of Lynn View High School. His first job in high school was working as a bag boy at Oakwood Markets on Sullivan Street. He went on to attend East Tennessee State University for two years. He then joined the Air Force and became a Staff Sergeant working as an airplane mechanic at the Eglin Air Force base in Florida. Don was a member of the American Legion Hammond Post #3/265 in Kingsport. After serving four years in the Air Force, he went to work for Holston Defense Corporation for 34 years until he retired in 1994. While employed he was the only employee at that time that had a perfect attendance record throughout his entire employment, never having missed a sick day. Don was a member of Kingsley United Methodist Church for the past 84 years. He sang in the church choir for the past twenty-seven years. Don was a very loving husband and father and cherished spending time with family and friends. He and his brothers Jack, Sidney, Bill, and his brother-in-law Earl Richards formed a gospel quartet singing at area churches and nursing homes. Don was also a long-time active member of the Kingsport Senior Center, where he enjoyed playing basketball, volleyball, pool, table tennis, pickle ball etc., He was employed by the City of Kingsport at one time for raising and lowering the basketball goals in the gym. He was very involved with the 1st Tennessee District Senior Olympics and won countless awards over the years. He was also a long-time volunteer of over 18 years for Kingsport Fun Fest working the Crazy 8's race along with his late wife.

Don loved to sing. He would sing one Sunday a month at Kingsley United Methodist Church and Hermon United Methodist Church for over ten years. He would also sing at Salem United Methodist Church and Shades of Grace United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Patricia Ann Tucker Salyer in 2018. Brothers and sisters, Pierce Salyer, Reba Salyer, Jack Salyer, Rosemary Salyer Richards, Frances Salyer Whidden, Sidney Salyer.

He is survived by his only son, Ryan Salyer of Kingsport; brothers, Jimmy (Keiko), and Bill Salyer; sister-in-law, Ruth Salyer; along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Special friends John Powers, with whom he shared a long-time friendship and Danny Justice and William Young, who helped as his caregivers at home.

The family will receive friends from 5pm to 7pm on Monday October 16, 2023, at Carter-Trent Funeral Home in Kingsport. A funeral service will follow with Rev. Ray Amos Sr. and Rev. Will Shewey officiating along with the choir from Kingsley United Methodist Church.

A military graveside service will be conducted at 2pm on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at Mountain Home National Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the American Legion Hammond Post #3/265 in Kingsport and Rev. Ray Amos Sr. officiating. Ryan Salyer, Bill Salyer, Preston Salyer, Sandy Richards, Jordan Salyer, Jonathan Salyer will serve as pallbearers. Family and friends attending the graveside ceremony are asked to meet at the funeral home by 1 pm to go in procession to the cemetery.

Ryan Salyer would like to express big heartfelt thanks to all his doctors and staff at the VA Medical Center, Gentiva Hospice, Lakebridge Nursing Home, Comfort Keepers, and Center Well Home Health of Kingsport for all their compassionate care of his father.

I was saddened to hear of Don´s passing. I use to play basketball and pickleball with Don at the Senior Center. Don was a kind, friendly and humble man. He always brightened my day. My condolences to his family. RIP Don, my friend.
