Walter Waddey Obituary

Walter Orum Waddey

February 26, 1933 -

November 4, 2024

Walter Orum Waddey, 91, of Knoxville, TN, passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 4, 2024, under the exceptional care of Sacred Ground Hospice House. Born on February 26, 1933 in Memphis, Tn, Walter was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend whose life was defined by his deep faith, dedication to family and service to others.

A standout student and athlete, Walter played football for Vanderbilt University before earning his law degree from the University of Tennessee in 1957. He then moved to Kingsport, where he enjoyed a long and successful career as a trial attorney. He participated in various civic activities and clubs, including many adventurous boy scout camping trips!

Later, Walter and Cathy began a deep spiritual walk together, teaching Sunday School and serving on Emmaus walks. Walter answered God's call into service as pastor for the United Methodist Church, touching many lives. Walter's unwavering commitment to his faith shaped every aspect of his life, and his passionate spirit made him a cherished presence in the lives of all who knew him.

Walter's quick wit was ever present, and he especially loved playing Balderdash. He was famous for his "shaggy dog stories." His family enjoyed his zest for life in such areas as music, hiking, camping, game-playing, storytelling, Cardinals baseball and, of course, UT football. Walter always considered himself greatly blessed by family, and some of our best memories come from large family gatherings as well as intimate scripture readings and prayer time.

Walter is preceded in death by his parents Frank and Alberta Waddey, his former wife, Marie B. Archer, his son Mark Waddey, and his stepdaughter, Christian Soronen. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Cathy Carroll Ham Waddey, daughters Karen Waddey Powers (Bill) and Laura Waddey, stepdaughters Catherine Pfeffer (Michael) and Bonny Cooper (Eddie), and grandchildren Natalie Cooper, Austin Cooper, Evan Cooper, Corey Cooper, Mariah Green, and Lisel Soronen.

A private graveside service was attended by family at Edgewood Cemetery on November 9. Walter's legacy of love, service and faith will continue to inspire all who knew him. He will be deeply missed.

Walter was a wonderful friend and brother in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I had the privilege of serving on several Emmeaus Walks with Walter and know him to be a genuine disciple of Christ. I rejoice in his homecoming and pray blessings on his family. He will be missed!
