GATE CITY, VA - Dorothy J. Hammonds, 82, of Gate City, Va. went to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 1, 2025. She was born on June 6, 1942 to the late Wrightly D. and Dona McDavid Spivey. Dorothy owned Jennings Grocery and Upholstery in the Manville community for many years. She loved quilting, gardening, feeding her birds, cooking for her family and was very devoted to caring for those she loved. The highlight of her life was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who affectionately knew her as "Granny". Dorothy faithfully studied her Bible daily and was a God-fearing woman. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her first husband, William "Bill" Henry Jennings; her second husband and the love of her life, B. Ellis Hammonds; brothers, Orville, Claude, James, John, and Donnie Spivey; sisters, infant Emily Kathleen Spivey and Ida Mae Hammock; and granddaughters, Angie Voyles and Brandi Darnell.
She is survived by her daughters, Donna Darnell (Martin), Melissa "Missy" Jennings, Lisa Dalton (John), Tammy Howe (Rick Stewart); son, Chad Hammonds (Julie); devoted nephew, Darren Spivey (Anissa); special niece, Jean Salyer (Bobby); grandchildren, Marlana Williams-DuPriest (Todd), Marty Darnell, Brad Dalton (Brittany), Dr. Jocelyn Newton (Dr. Alex Conicella), Ashley Dalton, Trey Howe, Zachary Howe, Lily Hammonds, Maggie Hammonds; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Elois Spivey Wolfenbarger; along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
The family will receive friends from 5 pm until 7 pm on Friday, May 9, 2025 at Scott County Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow with Pastor Shannon Salyer and Elder Jimmy Hammonds officiating.
A graveside service will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, May 10, 2025 at the Jennings Family Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Tony Bowen, Tony Tipton, Darren Spivey, Brian Spivey, Dustin Flanary, and Steve Akers. Honorary pallbearers will be Harrison Williams and Kamryn Darnell. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery by 12:50.

Traded a lot of coke bottles for candy at the store when we were kids . Sorry to hear this , I hadn´t seen Dorothy in so long , I don´t think I would have recognized her .
