Sharon Sundquist Obituary

Sharon Sundquist

Born: Feb 27, 1941 | Died: Feb 18, 2026

Sharon Sundquist passed away peacefully at her home in Vonore, Tennessee on the morning of February 18, 2026 at the age of 84. She was a beautiful, kind-hearted, faithful servant of the Lord who deeply touched the lives of her family and friends and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Sharon was born on February 27, 1941 in Graceville, Minnesota to Orville and Lillian (Berg) Horning and grew up in a loving family as one of nine children. She graduated from Chokio High School and then Concordia College in Morehead, Minnesota where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in business education. On August 4, 1962, she married Donald Sundquist, and together they moved to Ames, Iowa where he completed his graduate degree and she began work as a teacher. A few years later they moved to Midland, Michigan, where they resided for the next 42 years, raised their three children, and became active members at St. John's Lutheran Church and in their community. Sharon was an avid golfer, seamstress, 4-H sewing leader, and curler, including two state curling championships. For many years, she took great joy in being a homemaker and stay-at-home mom and then later worked in a local ophthalmology office. After Don's retirement the couple moved to Kahite in Vonore, Tennessee to begin a new chapter in their life. While in Tennessee, they became active members of Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church and the Kahite community. Sharon became well known in the area for helping people with clothing alterations as well as for the beautiful quilts she made. She dearly valued the many close friendships she made while living in Kahite.

One role Sharon particularly treasured was that of "Grandma" to her seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She always made sure that they felt special and cherished. She enjoyed making creative costumes for them when they were little, enjoyed playing board games with them, read them countless books, and baked and decorated cookies with them when they would come to visit. Each grandchild carries special memories of her they will always treasure.

Sharon was preceded in death by her parents Orville and Lillian Horning, brother Donald (Marilyn) Horning, sister Dorothy (Gene) Simpson, brother Wally (Peggy) Horning, brother Roger (Nancy) Horning, brother Ted Horning, and brother-in-law Robert Trost.

She is survived by her loving husband Donald Sundquist of Vonore, TN; daughter Lori (Michael) Wehmueller of Shelby, NC; daughter Jodi (Kurt) Niemann, of Scottsdale, AZ; son John (Colleen) Sundquist, of West Lafayette, IN; grandsons Eric Wehmueller, Andrew (Elizabeth) Wehmueller, Matthew (Felicia) Wehmueller, Luke Niemann, and William Niemann; granddaughters Sarah Wehmueller, Thea Niemann, and Bridget Sundquist; and great-grandson Thomas Wehmueller. She is also survived by her sister Marilyn Trost, sister Judy (Kenneth) Rethmeier, brother Curtis (Janna) Horning, sister-in-law Adrienne Horning and numerous cherished nieces and nephews.

A memorial service honoring Sharon's life will be held on Tuesday, February 24, at 2:00 pm at Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church in Loudon, TN with a reception to follow at the church.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in Sharon's memory to the American Cancer Society at donate.cancer.org.

When I informed a family friend of her passing, he replied Sharon was his favorite friend. We all agree!

Dear Don, i am so sorry to see this notice about Sharon. She was a lovely person. You have my deepest sympathy. I well remember Sharon at curling in Midland, and walking daily past my house with Margaret Blaser. I still have the small jewelry box you gave me when I moved away. And I'm still grateful for your help in maintaining my home in the 1990s. I am now remarried living in Illinois and having a wonderful life. You helped me in my most difficult times. Thank you so much. I wish the best for you and hope your children and grandchildren are a great blessing.
Take care,
Linda Frauson Troester

Sharon was one of the kindest, most thoughtful women I know! I was a new neighbor and signed up to the women's 9 hole league. Sharon saw my name on the signup list and immediately called me to see if she could drive me to the luncheon and show me the ropes. Of course I said YES! Then she asked if she could be my big sis and help me navigate the league, again, YES! I Love her and know I will see her again in heaven, until then we will all miss her terribly.
